A united position of the European football family<\/p>\n
UEFA and its 55 national associations stand united. Unanimously and unequivocally, we reject FIFA\u2019s proposal to transfer ownership stakes in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors.<\/p>\n
The World Cup is a legacy, not an investment product<\/p>\n
The World Cup must not be treated as an investment product. It represents one of the greatest legacies of world football, built over generations by players, national teams and fans from every continent. No part of it may be transferred to private investors.<\/p>\n
The World Cup is not for sale.<\/p>\n
Concern over the decision-making process<\/p>\n
It is irresponsible and unjustifiable for a proposal of such significance to world football to have been prepared in secret and brought almost to the stage of adoption without meaningful consultation with those entrusted with safeguarding the future of the game.<\/p>\n
This represents not only a serious failure of leadership, but also an abdication of FIFA\u2019s responsibility as the guardian of world football.<\/p>\n
National associations around the world are being presented today with a choice: accept the irreversible transfer of ownership rights over the most significant football competitions or bear the consequences. This is not democratic decision-making, but governance through pressure\u2014a practice unworthy of an institution entrusted with leading world football.<\/p>\n
Football must not be governed by investors\u2019 interests<\/p>\n
Our opposition concerns not only the way this proposal was adopted.<\/p>\n
The moment external investors acquire ownership stakes in FIFA competitions, football will change irrevocably. Commercial interest will become a permanent obligation, and investors\u2019 expectations a constant factor in the decision-making process.<\/p>\n
From that moment on, decisions on the international calendar, competition formats and the future development of football will no longer be made on the basis of the interests of the game, but according to the interests of shareholders.<\/p>\n
There is no place for such a model in world football. The future of football must not be dictated by those whose primary objective is to maximise financial returns. The interests of national associations, leagues, clubs, players and fans must not be subordinated to the interests of investors.<\/p>\n
Football must not mortgage its future for financial gain.<\/p>\n
Europe\u2019s position<\/p>\n
Europe\u2019s position is clear. We will never lend legitimacy to such a model. No one has the moral right to sell something entrusted to them to preserve for future generations.<\/p>\n
As a result of today\u2019s discussion, no UEFA member national team will participate in FIFA competitions as long as these proposals remain active, unless they are fully withdrawn and legally binding guarantees are provided that FIFA will never again open its governance or its competitions to private ownership.<\/p>\n
No one should have any doubts: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with complete determination.<\/p>\n
There are moments when institutions are judged not by what they are prepared to accept, but by what they refuse to compromise on. This is one of those moments.<\/p>\n
There are values that cannot be sold. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It has always been that way and it will remain so. And as long as Europe has its own voice, the World Cup will never be for sale.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
