The current president of the Union of European Football Associations, Aleksander Čeferin, has announced that he will stand for a new term.

The head of European football, speaking at a meeting with the presidents and general secretaries of the national associations being held in Berlin, said that over the past several months he had received unanimous support from UEFA member countries to reconsider his previous decision not to run for president of the continental association.

“I would like to thank the national associations for the trust they have shown. In the past, we faced enormous challenges, which we resolved as one team. Many more serious engagements await us, and there is still a great deal of work to be done. That is precisely why I accepted the request. My goals remain the same: to preserve unity in European football and maintain a strong UEFA that will be ready for the new generations. I would also like to thank my family, which had a major influence on my decision—one I would not have made without their understanding and support,” Čeferin said.

The 51st Ordinary UEFA Congress will be held in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, on 22 April next year.

Aleksander Čeferin took over as head of UEFA in 2016, replacing Michel Platini, and since then he has been re-elected twice as the head of European football. .
