A correct assessment and fully justified decision by the referee, who correctly identified the attacker’s intention to win a foul in the penalty area.
Namely, an analysis of the situation shows that the defender occupies a legitimate position and does not take any illegal action that would constitute a foul under Law 12 of the Laws of the Game, nor is there any clearly visible illegal trip or other punishable foul committed by the defender.
On the contrary, the attacker attempts to initiate contact with the opponent himself, after which he falls. Such behaviour indicates an attempt to create the impression that a foul has been committed against him, with the aim of winning a penalty kick. The mere existence of contact between players does not automatically constitute a foul, especially when the contact is initiated by the attacker and the defender does not act carelessly or excessively in his movement.
A particularly positive element in this situation is the referee’s excellent positioning, his proximity to the incident and the appropriate angle, which enabled him to directly assess the nature of the contact, the movement of both players and the reason for the attacker’s fall, without being misled by his reaction.
Given that a sports portal published a photograph that is evidently digitally manipulated, in order to inform the public objectively and transparently, we are sharing the authentic video recording of the specific situation, rather than relying on selectively displayed or digitally altered photographs that could mislead the public.
