The derby of Macedonian legends always carries a special weight

The eternal derby of the First Macedonian Football League carries a burden for both sides, who are locked in a fierce battle for supremacy with their competitors—Vardar, in this case, for the top of the table, while Pelister are fighting to avoid relegation.

The Bitola club caused a sensation with their victory in Tetovo against Shkëndija, a result that came after several draws against teams from the leading four, with new coach Marjan Sekulovski finally putting the pieces together.

“I am satisfied with our approach, fighting spirit and tactical discipline in the previous match in Tetovo. We withstood the attacks and made the most of some of our chances, which was crucial. We won, and the points are the most important thing. Our overall commitment paid off.”.

Looking ahead to the match in the 26th round, the Bitola coach speaks respectfully of the opponent, but reminds us that everyone has a weak side.

“The league-table position itself shows Vardar’s quality. They have a large squad. Those who play either have international experience or are internationals. As in every match, in this one too we will try to play with commitment and neutralise their individual and collective qualities, while everyone has weaknesses. They are our chance. There will be no easy match for Pelister until the end of the season,” said Sekulovski, calling on the players to once again play with fighting spirit and discipline.

Captain Mirko Ivanovski also understands the importance of the clash with the „red and blacks“, but reminds us that their victories this season were not achieved easily.

“Realistically, our clashes are the biggest Macedonian derby! Pelister are a solid team—we have shown our mettle against many teams—but we lost to Vardar after conceding from a deflected ball at the end of the first half, as well as to a counterattack goal that is difficult to replicate. I expect an equally hard-fought match; the team has confidence after the triumph over Shkëndija, who are currently playing the best football in the PMFL. Like any other derby match, it may be decided by one mistake or a surprise, so it is up to us to give our maximum and, with the support of the fans, try to be the ones celebrating after the 90 minutes have elapsed.”.

The „Greens“„ last 1–0 victory over Vardar came at home last season, 2024/25. The match will be played today in the evening under the floodlights at the new “Petar Miloshevski” Stadium in Bitola, kicking off at 20:00.
